A WELSH information and communication technology venture has become one of the first in the UK to pioneer green technology for use in computer products.
A2Z Computing of Newport provides specialist ICT back-up and training for some of the largest corporations and government agencies across South Wales.
In collaboration with the mainboard division of Fujitsu Siemens Computers, A2Z will become the leading UK supplier of lead-free computer mainboards.
The introduction of this 'green' technology will enable organisations across the country to adapt their computers in accordance with the European Union's restriction on the use of certain hazardous substances, which will be effective from July 1, 2006.
Aasim Ashraf, company director of A2Z said, "The impact of this new legislation will be massive as millions of PC users throughout Europe will be required to comply within a relatively short space of time. We already have hundreds of orders from PC distributors who are anticipating huge demand for these lead-free components, and have been commissioned by many local councils in Wales to supply and install the new mainboards."
A2Z will begin distributing the new technology this month.
In March this year the company received funding by Wales Trade International to allow the deal to progress.
"Our 'green' board underpins our mission to be a leader in global environmental standards, and to put Wales on the map as a major player in technological innovation," said A2Z company director, Howard Kirkman.
"Fujitsu has been producing bespoke products for us for many years, and we are delighted that this partnership has gone from strength to strength.
"Our next aim is to develop a totally 'green machine' - a computer made entirely of lead-free components."
Fujitsu Siemens has been making environmentally-friendly, lead-free components and mainboards for a number of years.
